It was on a chilly morning that the fox and crane first found her. She lay as a tiny bundle, curled up by the riverside with nothing but the thin silk that clad her body. 'How peculiar' they both thought, for the girl could neither see or speak, but could always tell when they were nearby.
She'd smile a weak smile.
The crane was a fickle creature and soon grew bored of her, leaving the fox with his words; "She'll never survive, not this winter, not the next. Better you build yourself a warm den than waste time on what should not have ever existed".
And with that the crane left, but the fox was left there hurt.
Surely a creature as weak as this human carried a purpose in life? Even the tiniest of ants and the oldest of trees have their duty in the world - be it providing air for us or cleaning our world bit by bit. But the fox had to admit, she did seem too fragile to survive the coming winter. He did not know how to make her better, nor how to comminucate with her. So he just sat by her, nested himself beside the sleeve of her kimino to keep her company. The little girl smiled as she stroked his warm fur, her touch growing weaker and weaker. The last leaf on a nearby maple gave a soft snap and fell.
